A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.

“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”

The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.

A Future Secured

Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.

“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.

“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”

Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
