The co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
The recent development deepens the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after decades with the organization, mentioning concerns that its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
