French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel after British demands

France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to back the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.

French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.

"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."

Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.

Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the boats.

This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, following a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left government.

This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.

Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the past.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
