Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
