Mikel Arteta Praises ‘More Reliable’ Squad and Acknowledges Kai Havertz Injury Blow.

Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his team can persist in handling with injury setbacks after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been out for months after undergoing an operation on his knee. Initially expected to be available at the start of this month, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when stepping up his recovery and could not progress “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” Arteta said.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This update creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker last weekend, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is available following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Remain

Further fitness issues surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements during the summer has resulted in a more robust situation to navigate such setbacks.

Squad Depth Key to Premier League Pursuit

When asked if a larger pool of players was helping their league challenge, his response was positive. “Yes, since the current term has seen more issues in the attacking line, and now the problems with the defence,” he continued.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in different positions, and they must be capable to adapt to new tasks if we are to fight at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Havertz

Addressing the delay previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He was doing everything. He failed to advance to the next level and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

He shared his personal desire to have him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his nature. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”

“His fitness history is phenomenal, he's rarely been injured, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back with the squad on the pitch because I think it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
