New Year Partygoers Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK

Meteorologists are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are expected to be cold, making additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is completely key.
