A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation battling entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason behind the attack remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.

Details of the Attack

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building close to the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the site overseeing the installation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement confirmed.

Security camera video showed a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a security uniform firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries across the street.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Important clues, like bullet casings, were discovered at the crime scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to establish their destination," added an official.

His family member, a close relative, expressed the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am devastated. I am shattered," she stated.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about subjects not many people were willing to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the citizens to not sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's children.
