The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
