The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
