The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
